MOBLEY

FREE SHOW

Mobley, whose real name is Anthony Watkins II, credits recent news events, particularly the Eric Garner grand jury decision, as the inspiration for deeper, more introspective songwriting. “About halfway through working on the record, the decision came back, and that was just devastating on multiple levels,” he says. “But it brought lots of things into a different focus, and it gave the work a moral center, and everything made sense after that.” That moral center is cleverly encased in layers of bright, thudding electronic flourishes and R&B-style vocals, as evidenced in the single “Swoon.”

His live show has a similar upbeat energy to it. He uses his film degree from the University of North Carolina and day job as a web designer to great effect, incorporating visuals, lighting and videos, in addition to toggling between playing the guitar, keyboard and an Akai drum machine. Being too cool for school onstage isn’t interesting to him. “I find it most compelling when performers seem like they believe what they’re doing and care about me believing what they’re doing,” he says.

SM WOLF

S.M. Wolf began as a tribute to the 2013 Spring Equinox. Adam Gross, former front man for Indianapolis group Amo Joy, was approached by a friend who was organizing a cassette compilation celebrating the equinox with spontaneous, one time bands. Accepting the challenge Adam holed up in the tiniest bedroom in Indianapolis and wrote and recorded seven songs on a 4-track reel-to-reel in one week’s time playing all the instruments himself, recording over an old Bee Gees tape. After the cassette’s release, S.M. Wolf began to get several show offers. Initially meant as a one time recording project, it was clear that S.M. Wolf had more steam in them.

TVVEEDS

Tvveeds play a blend of psych rock with big atmospheric guitar tones, funk influenced grooves, and dreamy soundscapes. Their music is equal parts Pink Floyd and Tame Impala, and recontextualizes classic 60/70s influence with a modern flair.

SATURDAY JULY 8

GREASY TREE

$5

Greasy Tree is a blues infused power trio with excess hair and even more
attitude. The band’s freshman, self-titled album is complete and set to be
released in February 2017. With the help of Pete Matthews (Evanescence,
Devon Allman, and Paul Simon) and Toby Vest of High/Low Recording
Studios out of Memphis, TN, the album has a raw, unfiltered sound that
reminds us of the greats. Cameron Roberts’ scorching guitar riffs/vocals,
dynamic beats/vocals from drummer Jacob Brumley, and gritty bass
tones/vocals from Red Dorton create a chemical reaction of Rock and Soul
that is bound to take you back to your roots.
